Disinfecting Your Office Desk

Oct 15, 2020

In addition to regular cleaning and disinfecting service at your office, it would be wise to develop a quick routine to disinfect your own desk and personal area. As we head into cold and flu season, in addition to the Covid-19 threat, you can never be too careful! Disinfecting your office desk makes a huge difference in curbing the spread of germs – even at home. Here are some tips to help you keep your area germ free on a daily basis.

Make A Kit

To easily clean your workstation, assemble a kit of supplies that you can always have on hand. Your employer may be willing to provide these for you, so it’s a good idea to ask. You’ll need basic supplies like:

  • Gloves
  • Paper Towels
  • Covid-19 approved cleaner (check the EPA website for lists, but most common bleach based solutions will do the job)
  • Cleaning wipes (be sure they are approved to kill the virus that causes Covid-19)
  • Labels (clearly mark any dilution instructions)
  • Spray bottle (if dilution is required)
  • Caddy

Develop A Checklist

Next, make a list of the things you need to clean to ensure nothing gets missed. Remember the basic rules of cleaning order, which are to start high and work your way down. Following a checklist is one of the best ways to prevent cross contamination while cleaning. Plus, it becomes a routine that gets more and more efficient with practice. Here are some high touch surfaces we recommend disinfecting daily:

  • Desk
  • Computer screen
  • Keyboard, mouse, and other computer accessory
  • Shelves and cabinet doors/drawer fronts
  • Desk chair
  • Office door handles
  • Mugs/cups
  • Pens, pencils, and other desk items like staplers or tape dispensers
  • Glasses

Combine Daily Disinfection With Regular Professional Service

We know it’s a hassle to do any extra tasks after your work day is over, but a quick wipe down of your workstation will help to stop the spread of germs. Simply grab your caddy and work through your checklist, then you’re done! It’s important to take a proactive approach to keeping your workstation not only tidy, but as germ free as possible. Disinfecting your office desk is just one step you can take to feel more confident about the safety of your workplace. If everyone completes this quick routine at the end of the day, the whole office will be more protected against viruses this fall and winter.
